What a great book! It made me nostalgic for a time that I never even lived。 I wanted to be John。 I wanted to have had his childhood。 I think this would make such a cute movie, I would love to see a movie of this!

easy and enjoyable read A story of country boys’ last summer together before transitions occur to push them out of adolescence and life as they know it。 It was easy to get into and just keep reading。

Great Read I am always saying how much I love stories of life。 Just following an author through everyday events。 This was exactly that with very likeable\believable characters。 I looked forward to reading it each night。。。

A Ten Star NovelFrom beginning to end, an excellent and wholesome story。 The characters became so real that I’d prefer to call them by their names。 Bill Rivers is an outstanding writer and I can’t wait to read another of his books; this one is movie material for sure!

it’s okIt was a little slow for me。 I enjoyed their adventures but there was too much in between。 I like a book I can’t put down!

Beautifully written book about how events affecting us can also have major impact on ourselves。 The characters of the three sons is strikingly drawn- I know - I raised 3 sons。 Well worth reading more than once

A very special story that is a tribute to the era it representsHaving lived through the turbulent times of the late 60s, I am amazed that a young writer could get it so right。 This novel covers so much territory and yet it is such a sweet story and a joy to read。

Through the eyes of a child and the pen of a master What an engaging story。 It brought me back to my own childhood with the memories of lightning bugs, wild adventures, and ghost stories。 The author handled worry, fear, and loss beautifully with simple wise lessons from the mouths of babes。 Definitely one of my favorite books now。

This was a solid read。 The novel reminded me a lot of William Kent Krueger's novels This Tender Land and Ordinary Grace in the aspect of the main character coming of age。 I took off one star because I didn't understand the logic on hold Jack could think that making his brother Pete famous would stop him from being drafted。 I though it was flawed logic。The story was very well written and the characters well drawn out。 I see a good future for Bill Rivers in story telling!!! I was in when I read there's a biker gang in tge description, I hoped there was a book series on SOA anyway this book here, it was five stars and beyond untill 50% of the book but in later parts it become real and like what grown ups write, a somewhat emotion bullshit that you can go without。。But But But its still a fun readAnd much better than that overhyped book by Emily Henry 😁 I was in when I read there's a biker gang in tge description, I hoped there was a book series on SOA anyway this book here, it was five stars and beyond untill 50% of the book but in later parts it become real and like what grown ups write, a somewhat emotion bullshit that you can go without。。But But But its still a fun readAnd much better than that overhyped book by Emily Henry 😁 。。。more

The heroism of family! The love and respect of family runs through this story of the boys of summer。 That they hero worship both mom and dad is a beautiful reflection of stability and hope for the future even during the turbulence of 1968。 A great read for 2022。

This was an entertaining book to read。 It was set in the 1960s and was about a family that had great values。 There are enough twists and turns in the plot to keep the book interesting。 It was a feel good book set that in a small town in rural Pennsylvania

Don

I thought this was a nicely written story about 3 teenage brothers during the summer of 1968。

I found this book a bit daunting。 Plodded through to the end。 Nothing compelled me to continue reading。 Perhaps it's just not my 'cup of tea'。 I found this book a bit daunting。 Plodded through to the end。 Nothing compelled me to continue reading。 Perhaps it's just not my 'cup of tea'。 。。。more

Stunning metaphors!A beautiful coming of age story told in a magical, musical way with stunning metaphors and an invaluable message of the worth of every person。

Lucinda Terry

This was much better than I expected。 It was heart-warming, funny, sad, and thoughtfully written。 It was much more than a boys coming of age story。 It was much more about how each character dealt with the difficulty life handed them and how they supported each other。

Kenneth F Emsweller

Coming of age。A wonderful story about a boy and his cousin coming of age and their family。 This story has plenty of adventure and a family that loves and cares for one another。 It is a story about a boy growing up and the valuable lessons he learns about life with the help of his family。 This story moved me and I would highly recommend it。

Kristen Walker

I thoroughly enjoyed this read!!

Susan

I really enjoyed this book。 It is a charming coming of age tale that meanders through an eventful summer in 1968 for three brothers and their city cousin in rural Pennsylvania。 I wish children still had the freedom to explore and discover as these four did! The story builds to a satisfying and exciting climax。Along the way, the author explores small town politics and our responsibility to stand up for ourselves and look out for our neighbors。 Heartfelt and uplifting。

Melissa

This is such a genuinely good story。 I loved the characters and they’re written in such a way that the reader “knows” them。 I just really enjoyed it。

Carol B。 Robinson

Marvelous。 Every emotion one has will be felt in that story。 A very talented writer indeed。 I would love to read more。

HeartwarmingI received this book in a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review。 The Vietnam War is raging and a small town family life is changing。 As the protests get dangerous Frankie, a cousin from the city, comes to stay。 Frankie isn’t what the boys expect as he becomes part of the family。 Can they keep the oldest out the war, what about their land? Become a member of the family and feel the emotions as the family struggles through the summer of 1968。

Georgia Landry

A Novel of FamilyA great story with the exception of the poor grammar with which it is written。 A story of siblings and a cousin who experience a little of everything over the course of a summer, it explores the familial bonds that hold a family together。

This book was a decent summer read。 It starts off pretty slow and almost lost my interest, but around half way through the book the pace starts to pick up。 The second half of the book is packed full of action。 Almost too full。 Overall though, the biggest problem I have with this book is the narrator。 He is a 13 year old boy and I found his voice to be inconsistent and unrealistic。 One minute his descriptions are overly vivid and sophisticated and then back to being more child like。 I started ski This book was a decent summer read。 It starts off pretty slow and almost lost my interest, but around half way through the book the pace starts to pick up。 The second half of the book is packed full of action。 Almost too full。 Overall though, the biggest problem I have with this book is the narrator。 He is a 13 year old boy and I found his voice to be inconsistent and unrealistic。 One minute his descriptions are overly vivid and sophisticated and then back to being more child like。 I started skimming over a lot of the descriptions because they just weren’t moving the story forward。 The book does have a nice message at the end。 It is a little preachy, but not too bad。 。。。more

Best book to Begin the Summer! This book is a joy to read! Rivers really knows how to hook you ever so gently into a story that’s makes you feel at home while at the same time provides exciting moments built with suspense。 I hope he’s written more good books like this one that I can read, too。 He tells a powerful story that’s hard to put down。

Absolutely adored this one! It had a feel of Stand By Me of boys enjoying the outdoors in the summertime, mixed with a little adventure and tiny bit of drama。 Makes me miss when summers were a bit simpler and family units all sat down around the table together each night。 Good, solid story and will definitely be on the lookout for more by this author!
